This tour explores the childhood, teen and young adult years of Harriet Tubmans life. Participants will visit sites related to her birthplace, her head injury at a country general store and areas associated with her first escape in 1849. Travel through rural areas of south Dorchester County as you experience stories of slavery and escapes along the Underground Railroad. Visit slave trading sites, a post-Civil War one room African American schoolhouse and a stop at the newly opened Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Visitor Center, opening in March 2017. A memorable tour and day on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Lunch buffet at Old Salty's will include ham, chicken, crab cake, salad, a variety of vegetables and dessert. The Library of Congress is the research library that officially serves the United States Congress, beyond that proscribed role, it is the de facto national library of the United States and is the oldest federal cultural institution in the United States. It occupies three buildings on Capitol Hill that are both remarkable public spaces and public works of art. Each is named after a President of the United States who has a strong connection with the creation of Congresss library.The trip to the Library of Congress will be self-guided. Meet at the Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum, located at 21668 Heritage Farm Lane, Sterling, VA. For directions, call 703-421-5322. Participants will become a "farmer for a day" in the interactive exhibit area for children and their families. Milk a life-like cow, collect eggs from make-believe chickens and ride the Equi-ponies. In addition, participants will visit the Waxpool General Store that has been preserved as a time capsule of days past. Tour the store and play shopkeeper, shopper, or postmaster. Parents/caregivers are encouraged to remain for 30 minutes after the conclusion of the program for playtime and touring on their own. Parents/caregivers must fully participate in the activities. This program is not appropriate for children younger or older than the advertised age range. Participating children must be registered.
